About Us
Skeermes proudly hails as a South African company, an endeavour aimed at acquainting gentlemen with the realm of traditional wet shaving. A "secret" inadvertently concealed from me, had never been shared or passed down. Venturing down the path of discovery to address the challenges of shaving, it swiftly transformed into a fervor and a gratifying ritual.
Growing up and becoming a young man, battling sensitive skin emerged as my paramount struggle, particularly along the chin and upper neck areas. I left no stone unturned, experimenting with dry electric shavers, gentle laser IPL to various products like scrubs and hair removal methods. While some offered marginal relief, the struggle persisted unresolved.
Nearly on the brink of surrender, I caught wind of the whispers surrounding traditional wet shaving. Intrigued, I chose to explore this time-honoured practice. With little to loose, I decided to give it a try, and to my amazement, a realisation gradually emerged. And that's when a moment of profound realisation struck me, prompting my skin to finally breathe a sigh of relief. The outcome proved nothing short of astounding, even right from my initial attempt.
The practice of shaving is an ageless tradition that has a rich historical background. Dating back to 3,000 BC, the act of shaving was linked to status, wealth, and societal position in Ancient Egypt. While Alexander the Great introduced the trend of clean shaving in ancient Greece, appearances held great significance in the Roman Republic era. Julius Caesar, recognized as a style pioneer, even plucked his beard hairs, influencing many Roman men to follow suit. In 1762, Jean-Jacques Perret, a Frenchman, crafted the initial design for a safety razor. Throughout the World Wars (1914-1945), soldiers were generally required to shave in most armies. Fast forward to the 21st century, a well-groomed, clean-shaven face now signifies professionalism and achievement.
